The Knipex version of the locking-plier is a definite improvement over the classic Vise-Grip. While the finish is quite similar to the Vise-Grip, the major improvement is the release-lever. On the Vise-Grip, the release-lever is squeezed against the lower handle to open the plier; often with an almost violent flinging-open of the plier. To prevent this explosive release of a Vise-Grip, one must hold the plier with one hand while squeezing the release-lever with the other. If the plier had previously been attached to the material with great force, the squeezing of the release-lever can be challenging. This is absolutely not the case with the Knipex! In fact, only one hand is needed to remove these pliers. Simply lift the release-lever upward toward the top handle. So little force is required that even the little-finger can do it. Unlike the Vise-Grip pliers, the Knipex open in a calm, civilized manner. Chinese-made Vise-Grip pliers, or German-made Knipex pliers? You get what you pay for. Caveat emptor!
